Dr. Hahn is Fired. What About Callie?
I guess no one was more shock about the news of Brooke Smith’s firing from Grey’s Anatomy than Brooke Smith herself. She wasn’t given any notice and she didn’t realize the day they were shooting this Thursday’s episode would be her last. Brooke Smith was told the network wanted to get rid of her character, Dr. Hahn, who is portrayed as a lesbian.
This was the biggest TV news from yesterday. In this interview Brooke Smith said —
“I was very excited when they told me that Erica and Callie were going to have this relationship. And I really hoped we were going to show what happens when two women fall in love and that they were going to treat it like any heterosexual couple on TV. So I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn’t write for my character anymore. I was really, really shocked.”
But another victim to this whole mess is none other than Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie Torres, Erica’s lover. This was the only story line that is developing her character, giving it some exposure. And it’s the kind of story line that is as real as real can be. With Erica gone, what’s her angle on the show now? Her marriage to George crumbled, her tryst with Sloan looks like it isn’t going anywhere. What will happen to Callie Torres?
